On 14th November 2018 His Excellency Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje OFR accompanied by his Deputy, His Excellency Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna presented the proposed 2019 Budget at the estimated sum of N219 Billion, tagged Budget of Sustainable Development to the State Assembly.

Dr Ganduje highlighted some of the major achievements of the year 2018 N246Billion Budget in different sectors some of which have already been commissioned while others are expected to be completed before the end of the year, while many more are expected to be completed by the beginning of 2019. Some of which include the Fanshekara underpass, Muratala Mohammed Way Flyover, Skills acquisition centre, Dangi Underpass, reconstruction of many primary healthcare centres, construction of over 2,000 classrooms, upgrading of Junior Sec Schools to Senior Sec Schools, payment of scholarship and allowances to our students both in foreign and private universities here in Nigeria, among many more achievements. The State government also recorded for the 1st time, revenue generation by the State’s Bureau of Land to the tune of N1.2 Billion.

For the 2019 Budget of Sustainable Development, it will be focused on the completion of ongoing projects in key sectors such as health, infrastructure, agriculture and other key sectors. It is expected that the capital expenditure will be N134.6 Billion while the recurrent expenditure will be N85 Billion.

A new initiative will be rolled out in this budget, which is the expending of 10 million each, in each of the Wards in the 44 Local Governments of the State. For infrastructure, the sum of over N35 Billion has been proposed, and the budget is expected to undertake the following infrastructural projects such as the construction of a new flyover at Kofar Mata, modern abattoir, expansion of Aminu Kano Way, Karaye to Rogo Road, Banki to Lambu in Dawakin Tofa Road, Bypass to Tsamiya Babba Road, Kwanar Jaba to Rimin Kebe Road, Tukuntawa to Danmaliki Kumbosto Road, take off and completion of Bunkure Road, Dawakin Kudu to Lahadin Makole Road, Tsanyawa to Dumbulun Road, Bataiya to Rigai Road, expansion of Katsina Road among others. Additionally, the State Government will also construct new 100 units of 1Bedroom and 100 units of 2bedroom low cost houses, urban Mass Transit and take off of the Kano LightRail project and so on.

On Education, additional 1000 new classrooms will be constructed, provision of new desk and chairs for the existing classrooms, expending N6billion in our higher institutions in projects such as renovation of libraries, and other development, also N16Billion will be expended in Yusuf Maitama Sule University in completing some key projects.

Other sectors such as Health sector got an estimated budget proposal of N25 Billion.Water Resources got over N26 Billion which has been budgeted for the provision of water supply in the state, and procurement of other water facilities. For Rural Development, the sector got N2 Billion. In Agriculture, the sum of N9.4 Billion was allocated. Environment sector god N3 Billion. The commerce and manufacturing sector got N1.6 Billion, while women and social development got the sum of about N900 Million. The Security and Justice sector also got proposed sum of N2.8 Billion and general administration got N7.8 Million.

In conclusion, the Governor expressed his profound gratitude to the State assembly and the Honourable Members for their cooperation in running his government, which played a key role in the many successes recorded in his administration. He also called on the general public to shun violence, especially in the forthcoming 2019 general elections, and prayed for a peaceful elections.

While responding, the Speaker, Rt Hon Alhassan Rurum thanked the Governor and his entourage for the presentation, which will be the last he will be presiding as Speaker, as he is contesting for House of reps in the coming 2019 elections. He also highlighted the 35 Bills signed into law passed by the legislature, with a promise to do more before the end of their tenure.
